Can illustrator crop an area?   -   03/11/2009

I am drawing a graphic in illustrator that has vectors that hang over the edge of the canvas. When I go to save it as an image, the area that hands over is visible showing all the nasty sides of my drawing. Is there a way to crop this and show only the selected area or do I have to use photoshop?

What you need to do is select the rectangle tool and draw a rectangle the size of the area you want to crop. If you have more than one layer, then you need to create a layer an place all of your other layers in that one layer. If you don't then what we are about to do will only apply to one layer only. Make sure the rectangle you drew is in the new layer you created. Then after you do that, go to the bottom of the layer pallet and click the "Make/Release Clipping Mask" button. There you go it is that easy. Every where outside of the rectangle will be hidden from view. The good thing is that it is a mask and not a crop. Cropping actually cuts off of the objects causing an inability to edit it in the future. I hope this helps.
